Essential Reading

Introducing Rabbits and Other Pets

Always be extremely cautious when introducing rabbits to cats or dogs, you must supervise at all times and ensure your bunny feels safe and secure.

Rabbits and Children

Rabbits are often referred to as a perfect childs pet which is far from reality, they should never be bought as an easy to care for pet. They have complex needs and can be easily hurt or frightened by a child. If you have children and are thinking a rabbit is the right pet for your family please understand the rabbit would be 100% your responsibility, as the adult it is up to you to care for its every need and ensure your child is constantly supervised when around it. It is possible however to introduce a rabbit into the family but lots of research on the pros and cons beforehand is essential.

First Aid and Emergencies

Disclaimer: Rabbit First Aid is not to replace expert Veterinary advice or treatment, it is for emergency situations where immediate action is needed and getting to a vet in time is not always possible. For an incident such as choking immediate action is needed on your part, afterwards you should always consult your vet for check ups and aftercare.

Rabbit Maintenance

As a rabbit owner it is very important that you regularly health check your rabbit and perform rabbit maintenance. This includes things like nail trimming, cleaning any dirt from their fur that they can't clean themselves, applying preventative treatments for parasites and so on.

Rabbit nails can grow very quickly so its important to keep on top of them to prevent them becoming overgrown and painful for your bunny. If you are a new rabbit owner the thought of trimming their nails yourself can be quite daunting, if you do not feel confident doing so you can have them trimmed by your vet. However learning to do it by yourself can definitely save you some money! I soon hope to make a step by step tutorial on correct nail trimming. In the meantime I hope these links can help you.

Hay Shopping

Since hay is the most important part of a rabbit's diet, it's vital you buy the best quality hay you can. Timothy hay is one of the best varieties because of it's high fibre content and long strands to promote good gut and dental health. Caution is also needed when buying hay because you want to make sure it is dust extracted, and ideally especially grown and harvested for rabbits to ensure there aren't any harmful plants mixed in.

I have personally used The Hay Hutch and would definitely recommend for good quality hay at a reasonable price. There are lots of varieties to choose from and they even sell treats!

Shopping

Please be wary when buying toys and treats for your bunny, even some well known retailers are known for advertising harmful products as 'safe' for rabbits. To err on the side of caution always look for natural items made from grasses, willow or apple branches. Avoid any treats containing seeds, added sugar or dairy products, don't be fooled by rabbit covered packaging as these substances are very harmful for rabbits and cannot be digested properly.
